For my birthday... 05/02/2012
Every year, I get wishes from people that have never met me. I get the obligated wishing of a happy birthday from those that "know" me. Most years I grumble and complain my way through my birthday. I am not a fan of it, yes, I am glad that I was born, but the entire celebration concept is something that is overrated in my mind... I guess I have always had high hopes or something and it has just never happened or something. Who really knows what the heck is going on with my strange and unusual mind? This year, I would like a present from everyone. I want to sell 100 of my books ( it doesn't have to be just one book). I know that 100 is a lot but if everyone bought one, and had a friend willing to buy one, that 100 would FLY by. Since my eBooks range from .99 to 2.99 I don't think it's too much to ask. Heck some of you will spend that much just dropping change on the street as you pull money out of your pocket throughout the day. So please, help me get my wish. 100 books sold. I can't believe that tomorrow I'm going to be 27! That is a trip! Here's a link to my author page on Amazon which lists all of my books: http://www.amazon.com/Jesse-Kimmel-Freeman/e/B0067FV0E2/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1335972651&sr=8-1 This is for Barnes and Noble (which doesn't have any of the skypirates or what is a rue-rue): http://www.barnesandnoble.com/c/jesse-kimmel-freeman Like it says, "Thank you!" The Happy Birthday Bloghop! 04/05/2012
Let's start by saying "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" to all those that have a birthday during this hop, including the fabulous Miss Carrie Ann! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! But maybe you're thinking, "what about me?" and you're birthday isn't in April, maybe it's in November or May (like mine), well for you guys.... That's right! A very merry unbirthday to us! Before I share my blog's worth of memories and such with you, let me tell you about the prizes, because who doesn't like presents on their birthday, or any other day of the year for that matter? The GRAND prizes for the ENTIRE hop is: 1. A Kindle Touch 2. A $60 Amazon OR Barnes and Noble giftcard Please make sure to leave a comment that INCLUDES your email address to be entered into the drawing for the GRAND prize, no email address, no chance! So leave it! For me, my prizes, hmm, let's see, a $10 giftcard to Amazon for any one that leaves a comment and, only if you want to, if you can prove that you've purchased & read Bella Notte (or one of my other works) by telling some random factoid that you liked about the story, then you'll be entered into the drawing to have your name as a character in Bella Tristezza, the third installment of the series! (I usually take character influences from the actual person too!) I know it's completely sneaky of me, but hey, you know you wanna read my books and be able to be put into the story, literally! ;0) Look at how convenient those buy links are just in case you didn't already have a copy and REALLY wanted to be entered! Okay, now that I've gotten the shameless promoting and happy wishes out of the way, let me share something with you. So this hop is kinda important to me because April 6 is my Mom's birthday. On September 29, 2010 I had to make the hardest decision any child can be faced with- to take her off life support or to continue to let her body be kept alive while she was gone anyways. That wasn't the day my mom left us, only the day her body was allowed to catch up to her spirit. Please don't judge, I don't think anyone can unless they've been in that situation. Anyways, since then it's been a day by day process to remember her as her AWESOME self. So this is my celebration of my Mom! Happy birthday, Maman. You are missed, but I remember what you always told me, to have a good cry and go on with my life. You aren't forgotten and I tell your grandbabies about you daily. Let me tell you guys a little bit about my mom, she was born in France, Orleans to be specific. She was born in 1952. She has a whole LOTTA siblings... they spent some time in a crazy orphanage before my grandma was able to take them all out when she remarried a nice man from Oklahoma. She moved to the good ol' USA when she was 7. She spoke no English. Can you even imagine what the heck that was like? There was LOTS of teasing and name calling... sometimes kids can be just cruel. She grew up an Army Brat. At the age of 16 (I think, it has been a long time since I heard the story and now I can't just call her and ask, the things we take for granted) she married a man that gave her a case of Bazooka joe bubble gum for her wedding present. He was rich and she felt like she had been lied to (don't even ask, I'm not even sure) and the marriage was annulled. I'm thankful for it, but still... really, Mom, just because he was rich and he down played it until after you were married?! LOL... She ended up in sunny Southern California. She met Herbie. Well, it didn't happen just like that, but who wants to hear about how my mom crashed the parties of celebrities wearing a top hat and overalls during her twenties?! LOL... Anyways, on with my story. She met Herbie. They fell in love (we aren't going to talk about the bad stuff because Mom always told me not to speak ill of the dead)... they ended up having my brother, Jason. The year was 1974. What a beautiful bouncing baby boy! Unfortunately, like many stories in the real world... this one too ends in tragedy. During a Thanksgiving meal, a robbery happened. Herbie went to defend his family and ended up being stabbed fatally. Her heart was broken.... However, life goes on... time doesn't heal the wounds, just makes them able to be dealt with. She did lots of things... but eventually fell in love with Tony. Who wouldn't? He's like Indiana Jones, only real... they had my sister, Jennifer. The year was 1979. Wouldn't you like a happy ending for my mom at this point? Too bad, you're not going to get it. Life happens. She ends up with two little monsters and no real man counterpart. But all things happen for a reason, right? Years pass. She has MANY different jobs. She is after all a very talented woman, and who wouldn't want such a looker around them. ;0) Andrew waltzes into her life. Well, I don't know the whole story, in fact I don't even know which parts of the story are true... once again, I can't ask any more. Once during an angry moment, I was told she paid him 30k to have me... not sure how that worked out... but it doesn't matter because once again I'm not allowed to speak ill of the dead and they're both gone. Anyways, she has once again picked not the best candidate for male counterpart, but behold a beautiful baby girl, Jessica is born. The year is 1985. Yep, that's me... A lot happens while I grow up. Some ugly fights, particularly with my brother. Some crappy stuff happens. When I was 9 my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer, because so fair her life has just been peachy right? It turns out that is not curable. The doctors give her six weeks to live after her surgery. She goes through chemo. She comes to my elementary school graduation in a size 0 dress that's falling off of her. But she's still alive. I go to junior high, she's bald from the therapy... kids can be cruel (people really need to remember to teach their kids not to judge others). She is my brave mom through it all. She helps to raise my nephew once he's born in 1998. He's the joy of her life. I go to high school. She's still alive... In 2002 my big sister comments suicide. My mom was devastated. Once again, she learns to pick up the pieces of her broken heart and continue on with her life. I go to college. She's still alive and one of the most inspirational women I know. But inspiration doesn't keep illness from getting worse. By the time I graduate with my BA in 2007, she's a survivor but she isn't doing well. I move myself, and partner back home while I'm pregnant with my son to help take care of her. She has her good days and her bad. She stays awake for two days while I'm in the hospital during the birth of my son. Her second grandson has gotten to meet his grandma (take that Dr. Six weeks!)... My niece was born before that, but I have to say that she did not make a big an impact because we hardily saw her (I believe it was 2000 when she was born)... In 2008 my son gets diagnosed with neuroblastomia, she's went to every appointment with me... sat through every test... and spread the word like wild fire. She believed that if you told enough people something that it had the power to send enough good thoughts into the world to make it better. Lots and lots of test and two surgeries later... my son is cancer free, which he remains to this day. Life is pretty good. I go back to school to get my Masters ... The summer of 2010 hits. Life turns upside down. She gets a headache that won't go away... after two weeks I finally convinced her to call her doctor. He sends her to the ER. After hours of waiting, she ends up being admitted. This is the beginning of the end. This just get worse. And worse... and worse.. The entire time she has a good attitude while she can. She lost her vision out of the blue, but she managed to smile and "watch" her court shows. She was gone long before her body was ready to let her go. Still not sure what the actual cause was... but I think that it was just time for her to move on to the next place... ya know? I mean life gave her LOTS of lemons and she made the sweetest lemonade! So happy birthday, Mom! You lived an AMAZING, wild ride of a life.. you won't be forgotten! Don't be sad if you've read this blog... it's merely a celebration of the crazy, insane life my mom had, and I didn't even put down the real crazy stuff.. merely a glancing over of it... it was my pleasure to share it with you. HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY! So let's start with what you can win, because let's face it, we all like to get stuff! From the blog hop, you could win: * DRUM ROLL PLEASE* Grand Prize 1: Winner's Choice of a Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet Grand Prize 2: Winner's Choice of a $90 Amazon or Barnes&Noble Gift Card Hot damn! If only I could enter! Hee hee! Okay, from my awesome self you could get a $10 gift card to Amazon! Woot woot! Read on to find out how to enter! So I thought in honor of the wee little people, I would share with you guys some of the strange traditions that happen around St. Patrick's Day.. you know, the stuff you didn't know before and probably could've lived your entire life without finding out! Good thing I thought of this blog, huh? :0) So in Chicago, they dye their river BRIGHT FREAKING GREEN! This isn't something that they just started doing, oh no, they've been doing it for over 40 years! Why you might ask? Because they are damn Irish PROUD... or maybe someone just dumped a few gallons of food coloring in one year and they were like ' YES, BEST IDEA EVER!' In Brisbane, Australia being Irish isn't about how green you can be or about the little men that dance around pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. No, they make sure to point to all the people that it takes to make up the foundation of Australia, by taking time to dress up like teachers, lawyers, and such. Because that's what it's all about, right? Not a holiday highly celebrated for its green beer. When you come into O'Neil, Nebraska you are greeted with a huge shamrock on the highway. And just to top that off, they have an Irish festival that includes none other than a dramatic reading of Green Eggs and Ham. What doesn't say Irish quite like green eggs and ham... Apparently, in Wisconsin, there is a town that renames itself "New Dublin," eats corned beef and cabbage all week, and does a parody on Finnegan's Wake. Now, you could probably come up with a hundred different ways to parody that wake... but it probably wouldn't include a bright green painted hearse complete with its very own movement triggered flying "dead body" (aka mannequin). Who doesn't want dead bodies flying in celebration of the Saint Patrick. And with all the big happenings all over the place for the great holiday that is St. Patrick's Day, why not on the world's shortest street as well? In Hot Springs, Arkansas, they hold a parade complete with green fireworks, Irish belly dancers (because this just screams Ireland to me!) and a pub-crawl. I'd like to know how the shortest street is hosting a pub-crawl... I'm just saying, what is on this street exactly? So you want that gift card? I mean you did read through all of that to find out how to get it right? First, if you wanna know if you won, follow my blog! Easy peasy! Second, please 'like' me on Facebook Third, follow me on Twitter Fourth, and most important, leave a comment so I can contact you with your strange and bizarre holiday traditions, I know not everyone celebrates St. Patrick's Day! Happy St. Patrick's Day! Feel free to snag a copy of one of my books too! :0) What's going on.... 02/22/2012
Here's an update on what's going on in my world of writing... I'm still working on Dead to Bites. What I originally thought would be a novella looks like it's turning into a short novel. Apparently I don't have the ability to start a story and write it without it being long- even when I start out with the idea of making it short. I am up to 20 short chapters. I like the story it's developing in an interesting way. I also love the fact that as I post parts of it up on Wattpad, reads are reacting to it. :0) It's a fun storyline to work on, and one that I will probably be revisiting after I finish this one. Bella Vita will be published this year. The date just keeps jumping around. I work on edits as my editor drops pieces to me. I've posted the prologue and first chapter on Wattpad. Those readers WANT it now. I don't know if I'll post the entire thing up on there. I'd like to believe that some of those people will actually buy the book when it comes out. So this is being worked to get out this year. It is just a slow moving vehicle. It hasn't been forgotten. I promise! I know that many of you want to know what happens to Emma... Yes I'm still working on Bella Tristezza, it's just more on the back burner right now as I try and get everything else taken care of with the other books I'm working on. What is a Rue-Rue? Is just about ready to be released in both eBook and paperback. The final files require some tweeking, like changing the original copyright year from 2011 to 2012 and little things like that. :0) But other than that it is just about there. It was fun to revisit this one as I made sure that the proof was good to go. I like the idea that this is what happens whenever a new child is brought into a household... I suppose it could be applied in the world of animals as well. Brody Saves Rue, the second Brody and the Skypirates book, will be released this year as well. I'm hoping in the next few months. I am working on the illustrations right now. I'm up to page 23 out of 33. I've also changed the release on Brody and the Skypirates. For the next 3 months it is exclusive to Amazon in eBook form. We'll see if it does anything for my sales! This is my little pet project too... I'm so afraid of zombies, writing about this is my way of conquering that fear. LOL. The name is actually The Zombie Files, but I made a quick mock cover and used the original title from my folder for it. If I can bring myself to actually write it the rest of the way, I'll release this book as well this year. Unfortunately, there are zombies and scary crap in it *gulp* and I have write it! Damn, just writing all of this down I'm tired. LOL. Well, I've got things to do and I just wanted to give the world a little update! Working... and distracted... 02/06/2012
So I get distracted while I write. Maybe it's the four month old, or the four year old, but I get distracted. Sometimes it takes me a few days before I get a chance to sit back down and write out the great scene I had come up with. It's interesting. The problem is that I don't the crazy mom thing well. My kids come first. I miss being able to just write. But my house is the house of nuttiness. LOL. So if you want me to upload to Wattpad or get the next book in the Bella Series out, realize that I'm blessed with small monsters. I try to respond to emails and messages- if I've missed yours, I'm sorry. I just thought I'd do a quick blog, I know I should blog more. Maybe in the future. Happy Friday the 13th! 01/13/2012
Happy first Friday the 13th of the year! That is right! Clearly this year promises to be an awesome one since the first month gets this honor. I know some of you are thinking, who cares? or rather this is supposed to be a lucky day... Psst to that! It's not an unlucky day, just like I suppose it isn't a lucky day but it merely reflects our own beliefs. If you believe it will be an awesome day... it will be. The power of belief and all that jazz! If you feel that this day is terrible and should just be skipped over... well I hope no black cats cross your path. They might cause inexplicable chaos to happen in your life. For me this little guy only brings a big smile to my face and makes me want to get another kitty- of course the kitty pee that was in a VERY NOT CATBOX spot this morning, also makes me not want another one! LOL You may want to avoid ladders too. But I think that this is just logic for anyone... if you see a ladder, you probably shouldn't walk under it... I mean all sorts of crapola could fall on your head, killing you instantly. Or at the very least taking off your ear on the way down! So you should definitely avoid them... Or if you need to use one make sure it isn't an old busted one. It could really hurt if one of the steps broke and you fell or worse hit a certain part of your body. OUCH! You should also avoid witches, especially ones selling big red apples. I mean, they might want to sacrifice you to some crazed witch god or goddess. And if they have apples you know that you're done for anyways. I'm just saying, after all, witches are more likely to be crazy on the 13th landing on a Friday! I'm just kidding... Friday the 13th is my FAVORITE day that comes randomly walking along. I have ALWAYS owned a black cat, so I don't really think they are unlucky. They have just been pegged with a bad rap- much like pit bulls. Ladders can be very useful tools, so if you need to use one today- have at it! As for witches... having been a practicing Pagan since I was twelve, I can only assume that some might find this day to be good for certain spells (oops, I guess I'm out of a broom closet or something). Anyways, enjoy the day and don't let silly superstitions stop you from conquering it and making it yours! It is after all... just another day! So get out there and enjoy it! The ball has dropped, and you hopped. You happily bounced from blog to blog reading people's memories, sharing some of your own and happily entering to win various prizes. Will you be the one that is immortalized as a character in Bella Tristezza, the third installment of the Bella Series? Or will you win a digital copy of Bella Notte, the first book in the series? Or better yet, did you win the Kindle Fire or Amazon gift card? Let's start with my stuff first! The winners of the 3 digital copies of Bella Notte (picked by random.org) are: 1. Lori Z. 2. Bre A. 3. Shadow The winner of the namesake in Bella Tristezza (also picked by random.org) is... SHADOW (You are one lucky bug!) The winner of the Amazon Gift card: from VK Syke's site - June And the winner of the Kindle Fire!: from Malia Mallory's site - Lilaz! Congratulations to all the winners and a BIG thank you to those that entered as well as Carrie Anne for hosting it the entire thing! I don't know how many times I spent New Year's Eve with my Mom staying up waiting on the ball to drop. We would sit on the couch, occasionally getting up to pop a popper or refill our glass of child wine (sparkling cider). She spent so much time trying to make sure that the experience was amazing. She never wanted me to be bored with life. We'd watch old time movies or how New Year's was celebrated around the world. One year, she filled our hallway with balloons full of paper punch outs- you know from when you are making a 3-hole punch. I held my nephew in my arms, he must have been 4 or 5 at the time and he tightly clutched a sewing needle between his little kid fingers. The balloons dangled from the ceiling, awaiting their moment of ultimate destruction. I walked him around the tightly enclosed space. POP! POP! POP! The balloons exploded in a musical rain of paper and balloon parts. The downstairs neighbor came up and pounded on the door with his meaty fist. Apparently we had woken him up. But it didn't matter, no, we were busy enjoying the passing of the old into the new. Especially as we watched the clock tick closer to midnight. So many memories of years drifting into the history of my life, but none of them would be what they were if it wasn't for my mom and her always trying to make the moment memorable. I can only hope to be as cool a mom as she was to my kids... Maybe this year we'll create our own holiday to honor the silly antics of our parents as we were growing up! Now for the interesting part... You've read my memory or at least skimmed it...I want you to leave a comment with the best silly antic your parent/spouse/sibling/friend ever did that when you look back, it makes you smile. At the end of the day I will giveaway 3 digital copies of Bella Notte (or you could opt for a digital of Brody and the Skypirates, but it's best shown in color) and ONE special person will get their name featured as a character (not necessarily a large role) in my third book in the Bella Series, Bella Tristezza! Have your namesake immortalized! Follow the blog to remember to find out if you're one of the winners!
